Activities in Kalix (Sweden)

Kalix is the departure point for the famous Polar Explorer Icebreaker which takes guests out into the Bothnian sea and through the sea ice on an adventure like no other. Located in Norrbotten County, Sweden, the name Kalix is believed to come from the Sami word Gáláseatnu, or “Kalasätno”, meaning “The cold river” after the local Kalix River which flows into the sea causing the local seas to freeze in winter. The archipelago outside the Kalix coast line is made up of over 790 islands.
